I was listening to Radiolab today and they had the story about the whale that thanked some divers after they set her free. It’s a great story if you haven’t heard it. http://www.radiolab.org/2010/jan/11/

Anyway it reminded me of the mouse that I rescued a few days after Binki went missing. I had caught some mice sneaking into the laundry room so I stuffed the holes up with steel mesh, but there were three little holes at the top of a panel that I didn’t see. Well later that day I heard a mouse crying and I thought “Aha! He’s upset because he can’t get in!” I figured I had finally solved my mouse problem. Later that night I was getting ready to go to bed and I heard a mouse crying again. I went to investigate and I finally find him, upside down, his little head sticking out of this hole – which is smaller than a dime.

He must have been stuck like that for at least eight hours. I assume he must have gotten in that way at some point – maybe when he was smaller – and just hadn’t realized he was too big to fit now. After about ten minutes of trying to get him to pull himself up and out, I remembered I had these!

So I managed to split the thick plastic and hold it apart long enough for him to wiggle out. He ran down my arm, jumped to the floor and ran into the spare room. I wasn’t too worried because all the mice end up in the trash can anyway, because they jump in and can’t jump out.

The next morning there he was, with his little mangled ear, sitting in the trash can. So I took him outside to set him free. Well I have set dozens of mice free after they end up in the trash can and they all do the exact same thing, they haul butt out of the can and run straight into the bushes. This one did not. He walked to the edge of the can turned around, sat down and looked up at me. He just sat there looking at me for the longest time. It was so sweet. Finally I told him it was OK and shooshed him out of the can. I think he knew I was the one that got him unstuck and I really think he was grateful, just like the whale.

Buycott is an app that you download to your phone, when you scan items it tells you the origin so you can avoid buying products that fund a lot of terrible things in the world.

I don’t know how many of you have heard of bear bile farms, I hadn’t until recently, but they are one of the most depraved things I’ve ever known humans to do to animals. The bears suffer incomprehensible mental anguish and physical pain for decades.

Bears are kept in cages so small they can barely move, the bile is usually extracted twice a day through an implanted tube, the process is believed to be painful, as the bears can be seen moaning and chewing their paws while being “milked”. Other methods include pushing a hollow steel stick through the bear’s abdomen. Some are forced to wear iron vests to keep them from pulling out the tube.

This just has to stop, how can we be so cruel?

I am asking that we all boycott Made in China until this is stopped and the bears are set free. Surely you can put off buying more stuff until the bears are rescued? An estimated 20,000 are suffering right now, right now while I type this. I have to believe that we are better than this, I have to believe that if the only thing we have to do to end this is not buy something, we can do that.

It’s been a horrible week

Binki is missing, she has been gone for a week. I took her outside (like I’ve done many times) and she flew off. I found her four times the first two days but she couldn’t fly to me because of the wind. Now I can’t find her anywhere. It’s totally my fault. I’m worried sick, I can’t sleep. And then the little friendly dog was hit by a car and killed, I had to bury him in the back yard, his owners never came for him.

It’s all Binki’s fault

Binki was my first bird. I found her at a pet store in the Bronx. I usually avoid pet stores but I had twenty minutes to kill and my only other option was a McDonalds. Binki caught my eye right away and she never gave up trying to get my attention. She positioned herself in the cage so that she could see me wherever I was in the store. Finally, I relented and went to see her. As soon as they opened her cage door, she was out like a shot and into my arms. So of course, I ended up taking this strange little bird home with me. I had absolutely no intention of keeping her. I figured I would just get her out of there and then find her a good home.

After I got Binki home one of the first thing I noticed about her was how strange her little feet were:

They looked like little chicken feet! This is why I call her “Binki Chicken”. I had a very hard time eating chicken after that. Every time I ate piece of chicken it reminded me of Binki. After a while I just couldn’t do it anymore.
