About dou dou

What is a dou dou?

“dou dou” is a French word that can mean a child’s favorite cuddly toy. Think Linus from Charlie Brown – Linus’s blanket was his “dou dou”. dou dou can also mean sweetheart, it all depends on where you come from. I like to think of it as a cherished object – no matter what your age.

dou dou is also the name of my little bird that is lost, and my inspiration for the birds I make. dou dou was the most amazing creature I have ever known. He made me realize just how aware and alive all living creatures are, and I miss him terribly.

Feel free to reblog anything you find here and I always appreciate comments, even if I get distracted and forget to reply :)

  1. Thank you very much for visiting CorneaCopia and taking note of my Seagull. Sorry to hear about your bird, though. I’m off now to meander through your own words and images. Be well.

  2. Thanks for stopping by. I’m sorry to hear about Doudou and it is great you are cherishing his memory. I love birds and like your miniature art birds! You are so right … all living creatures are SO aware of everything that is around them. It’s obvious you gave Doudou a great life filled with love. God bless, Trina

  3. Hi doudou, I think you are a talented Artist! Your sculpted birds are quite life-like. I so appreciate nature – alive and in art! Have a wonderful coming few days! Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  9. Thank you for visiting my site and liking ‘My Friends Are Back’ post. Now that I’ve visited your site, I see that you love birds. I think they’re among the coolest creatures on earth–so spontaneous and free. Sometimes I dream that I can fly like one. Anyway—you have a very nice site–lovely work and photos. Like your idea for writing a story too. I write, so maybe I’ll take you up on it. I just need to finish NaNoWriMo first.

  10. Those are pretty birds. What are they made of? I used to have these little birds made of something that reminded me of styrofoam. I don’t know what it really was. They were small and very light. They were quite pretty.

  11. Hello! I love the Dou Dou Birds! Thank you so much for visiting my new blog, Ladybug Memoirs, and liking my As Free as a Bird post. I felt very encouraged by it to continue a bird and nature theme, so thanks again! I look foward to checking our your blog and precious little dou dous more too! ;)

  12. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad you liked it.

I also like birds. Have taken and published seagulls, turkeys, pelicans, etc.

  13. Sorry to hear about your bird! My grandmother had birds and they were beautiful, colorful, and muisical! You make wonderful little “dou dou” May I ask what is your favorite bird?

    • That is a tough question! I guess I have to say my favorites are my little birds, Sweetie Boo (Conure) and Binki Chicken (Cockatiel) and my little dou dou wherever he might be, he will always be my number one favorite – that bird was amazing. :( sniff…

  14. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog lately–I’m glad to know you enjoy it. I’ve got a couple of bird posts planned for the weeks leading up to Christmas… maybe they’ll provide a bit of artistic inspiration :)

  15. Thank you for your regular visits to my site – I so appreciate it. And I always love to reciprocate and see what new little birds you are making. They are so sweet!

  16. Wonderful to find out about your work via your response to a
photograph of mine. What great birds! C Hayes NY

  17. You are very creative and handy with a camera as well. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  18. Dear Doudou, Thanks for giving a thumbs up to my grey fantail on nest post How did we find our tiny blog site in far off south eastern Australia ?
I checked your site and love your bird sculptures. Do you do custom jobs for customers in foreign lands? There is a bird here called a Rainbow Bee- eater . If you could ever make one of those I would be interested.

    • That is so weird! I just found this adorable little bee eater today and saved his picture so I could sculpt him! Is this the one you’re talking about?

      beautiful bee eater

I stalk the blogs for birds ;)

  19. Thanks for liking my birds. I enjoyed your sculptures as well as the photos. Sorry to hear of your loss.

  20. Thanks for your interest in my Kenya Birding blog! I love the Yellow billed hornbill you’ve sculpted! Can’t wait to see how the Bee-eater turns out.

  21. Our world has oh so many beautiful creatures in it! My personal favorites are my eagles of course. I have gotten to know several dozen in the area.
I even have a Anna’s Hummingbird coming to my feeder right now in Tofino!
I’m glad you like the shot ! I was going to give you a copy, but realized that I do not have your e-mail address?
    Thank you for stopping by.

  22. Thanks for liking my pic. You have a cute website, and more power on your art. Cheers!

  23. Saw your “like” on our “Cachers of a Feather” blog and followed it back to your blog. Wonderful artwork! Thank you for sharing. For obvious reasons, I really enjoyed the one you left in the NYC subway. We leave our signature duckies in geocaches all over the country and letting them go is sometimes the hardest part. If you are ever interested in trading or collaborating (though your work is vastly more artistic than our ducky doodles) just drop us a line. I’m adding a link to your blog to ours. Take care and keep up the ducky/bird art!

  24. Hi, thanks for my first `like` on my new WordPress blog!

  25. I wondered if doudou came into being as a repetition of the French word doux, which is pronounced the same as dou and which means ‘soft,’ and my Petit Robert dictionary confirms that that’s what happened.

  26. Thanks so much for liking my post “Birds And Reflections” I appreciate it very much. Also my nickname is dodoh taken from my name Dolly, which also means my baby doll. I like your blog :)

I know how attached pple can get to their little friends as I thought the bottom had fallen out from my world when my little dog died 4 years ago. Thanks for liking my post about the brown falcon. Just for you I will put up a beautiful picture of a red backd kingfisher today, I think he is gorgeous! U will too. Love your whimsical little birds!

  67. Hi!
Thanks for visiting my blog! I love looking at your creations.
(I am heading for the ecuadorian rainforest in a few months and hope to get some interesting bird pictures.)
On a side note, I work for the kids department of the local library. This summer the reading program theme is “night” and I am working on a “night flyers” family storytime. I was wondering if you had any ideas, blogs or websites, for nocturnal bird crafts for 3-5 year olds (other than owls). I found one online for owls that were made from toilet paper tubes but you are so connected to bird bloggers and so artistic, I was hoping that you might point me in a good direction. The summer reading program doesn’t start until June 1st so I have time to keep looking.

    • Ha! I am uploading a “How To Sculpt An Owl” video right now :) I can make a “How To Sculpt A Bat” one for you if that would help. 3-5 is pretty young, sculpting might not work – maybe construction paper and toilet paper rolls? Email me if you think that might help, you can reach me on my site: http://doudoubirds.com

I don’t know of anything off hand but maybe someone that reads this does. If I hear of anything I will pass it along.

  68. Thanks! The kids are young – but maybe an inspiration will come from one of your followers. I will enjoy looking at your video though. I’m not one for sculpting, but would love to see how a pro does it! I love looking at your bird art. Thanks!

  69. I live in France and so understand the comforter, dou dou but I wondered if you were aware that in Scotland people commonly call pigeons and doves “doos”. My grandfather kept pigeons and always talked about his doos.

  70. Thank you for stopping by my blog https://thewoofilicious.wordpress.com/ and liking the post :) Your bird art looks really really awesome!

  71. Hi, thanks so much for commenting at my blog, and for following it!

  72. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I am enjoying your bird photos and info :)

  73. Who was dou dou? What type of bird? I’m sorry you lost him/her!

I know what it is like to lose an animal friend. My deaf cat, Hino, was with me for 20 years. When he died, I thought my heart would break. He taught me alot. I think of him, every day.

I’m glad you liked a post of mine. :) Thanks

  74. Nice to meet you. :)
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
