This will probably make you cry, but it helps us all remember that even the littlest feathered ones among us have feelings too.
We’re all in this together, let’s be kind to all living things.

One night as I was driving I happened upon a raccoon that had been hit and killed by a car. I’m unsure if the raccoon beside it was the mother or the half-grown child, but… it was wringing its paws together (they have “fingers and thumbs” like people, crying, occasionally running over and pushing the dead raccoon (perhaps it was dying and not dead yet), running around it frantically. It is too easy, if you do not live with them and see this, to fall into the “dumb animals” trap. When you choose to open your eyes and heart you discover a world that is so full of love and beauty… you just can’t even begin to find the words.
I am blessed to see this, even when it breaks my heart. Thank you for sharing.
This video is bad enough, but to see a raccoon reacting in that manner — Wow!
Thanks for that story, there is someone that reads this blog that isn’t too fond of raccoons, maybe this will soften her heart a bit
And yes, the word IS full of so much love and beauty, it’s easy to focus on the negative stuff and forget that.
I am sobbing….
Reblogged this on jmgoyder.
This is so beautiful! So sad, I feel bad for the poor birds
I saw something similar with Brown Thrushes. It was almost the same scenario with one of them hurt in the middle of the road and the other literally trying to drag the hurt bird out of the street. I stopped my car, got out and carried the hurt bird to the side of the road. It’s partner was right there flying over my head. I don’t know if it survived, but I went back later that day to the spot in the bushes where I’d put the injured bird and it wasn’t there anymore. Later that day I saw a pair of thrushes flying together and I want to believe that was them. But I was amazed at how the one bird was trying to save his mate and how he wouldn’t leave her side…
Oh I hope it was them you saw flying!!! Thanks for helping that little bird
great way to connect our soul strings…..
every time my wife and I hear an “expert” speak of animals not having emotion, or meaningful vocabulary, or intelligence, we are dumbfounded by their lack of knowledge about animals. I think the best definintion of emotion I hever heard was David Attenborough stating that emotion is an awareness of instinct. Once I thought about it for a few moments, I realized that is a true statement for all of us.
Yes, me too. I wonder if it’s because they start off with the wrong belief and work from there? Anyone that has known an animal or bird knows they feel – even bugs! I’ll never forget this time I killed a bug years ago, I don’t know what kind of bug it was but it screamed when I killed it. I was so horrified at what I’d done. I catch them and put them outside now.
“emotion is an awareness of instinct” I have to think about that one….
Heartrending.
Thanks for posting this. I shared it on Facebook and Twitter.
Thanks, I think everyone should watch it, it’s sad but worth seeing
Sad, but meaningful reminder. thanks ( heading to bird feeder to add more food)
This is sad! I cried!
I’ve seen that video before and cried each time. I have two pet starlings and they are very affectionate so it’s not news to me that animals have feelings.
All you really have to do is spend a lot of time watching wildlife to understand that they know more than we think they do. I’m lucky because I hang out at the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Sea World, on a weekly basis so I see what many animals are capable of.
